Ready to tear it up on Stage? Here's what you gotta know!

What experience do I need to participate?

No experience is required to be part of Dance Production. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join!

NO AUDITION REQUIRED!

How do I become a dancer? What is the time commitment?

Sign-up for our dances during the second weekend of school! You will watch a video containing snippets of our choreographers' pieces and fill out a form requesting to be in the dances you want.

After you join, you’ll attend one 90-minute rehearsal a week for each of your dances! Additional events may include two club-wide showings in each semester where each dance performs for the other members of the club to show what they’ve been working on as well as tech rehearsals in the week leading up to the shows.

What if I can't make it to dancer workshops?

Our sign-ups are completely virtual this year! If you miss the submission period, please email oxydancepro@oxy.edu to request the form and video.

What are the best dances? Which dances should I join?

Dance Production is a showcase of different styles of dance, not a dance competition. There is no “best” dance. All choreographers are selected not only because of their expressed artistic talent and love for dance, but also for their dedication to foster an inclusive and fun learning environment for all dancers. With that being said, each choreographer has their own style of teaching, so each dance has its own feeling. We implore you to listen and watch the entire sign-up video carefully and choose the dance you think best fits your interests. Please note that we ask each student to rank their top five dances, as limited space for each dance (either requested by the choreographer or studio-permitting) may not allow all dancers to get their first choice(s).

I've never done this before. I'm a bit scared. Is this okay?

Of course! Dance Production is the perfect place to try a new type of dance! Dance Production encourages all dancers to step outside their comfort zones and try a style new to them. We aim to make our dance rehearsals a warm, welcoming, judgement-free environment!

What if I cannot make it to a rehearsal?

If you are unable to attend rehearsal, please notify your choreographer at least 24 hours in advance. Choreographers may set their own attendance policy; however, if a dancer misses more than three rehearsals, the choreographer reserves the right to cut them from the piece.

Can I switch dances?

Switching dances is allowed at the discretion of the Executive Board and involved choreographers. If you would like to switch dances, you must email the Executive Board at dancepro@oxy.edu cc’ing both the choreographer of the dance you want to drop and the choreographer of the dance you want to join. The Executive Board will try to arrange the requested switch, but switches are not guaranteed. Switching dances without the pre-approval of the Executive Board is not allowed and may lead to expulsion from Dance Production. Dancers are allowed to ask for dance switches anytime before the cut-off date, announced later in the semester. Switches requested late will not be considered, except in extreme cases.

Can I withdraw from a dance or Dance Production? Is there a deadline to do so?

If you no longer want to be part of a dance, you must email the choreographers of the pieces you wish to drop and the Dance Production email (dancepro@oxy.edu) as well as fill out the Dancer Drop Form. If you want to drop out of Dance Production entirely, do this for all of your dances and be sure to specify your desire to withdrawl in your email. Dancers who drop out of Dance Production after first showing will not be given a refund of their dues. Dancers who drop will also not receive the club shirt handed out to active members the week of the show.

What if I'm going to be abroad?

Abroad for the fall semester? No problem. Dance Production has had many members and even choreographers participate from overseas. To secure yourself a spot, email dancepro@oxy.edu in early September and ask for a Dancer Workshop form. We will provide you with choreographer videos so you can select your top 5 dances accordingly. Send the filled out form back to us and we’ll take care of the rest.

Abroad for the spring semester? No worries, you can still participate in the fall, but you may be missing out on the shows in the spring! We'll miss you, but maybe you can show off your new moves to your new friends abroad! Just note that certain choreographers might have restrictions on enrollment and participation if you are going abroad during the show.
